INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF BELGIUM (ISB) – HOOPS 4 HOPE SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR 2012
April 12th, Cape Town

ISB Athletic Director Jason Baseden’s dream was always to create a platform for ISB youth and Hoops 4 Hope youth together. He was also excited about the opportunity where their soccer coaches would finally meet. With his team of sixteen ISB students ready for action, this group did not waist time! They started their first day with a mountain hike, filled with enthusiasm, and together with their coaches they delivered basketball and soccer coaching clinic for players in the township community of Philipi. Further soccer and basketball coaching clinics for girl and boys soccer took place at the MPC Crossraod Center in Crossroads.
The final day saw a thrilling game between the ISB mixed team and the Hoops 4 Hope select township team. This final game was highly anticipated, as every seat in the indoor hall was filled with excited local fans who watched these teams exchange numerous scoring leads. Ultimately the local Hoops 4 Hope select team won the game, much to the delight of the local fans.

Outside of that, ISB spent a remarkable amount of time with Hoops 4 Hope coordinators and participating youth and the kids just loved this group. The ISB team also visited sights such as: Robin Island, Greenpoint Stadium, The Waterfront, Lions Head, Cape Point, and the Cape Of Good Hope.

Among the ISB students was 17 year old Madi Bartlett who, though born in Germany, is well rooted in South Africa. Madi’s parents, both South African, travel a lot for work purpose, thus have given Madi the opportunity to travel all over the world. She has enjoyed learning and experiencing different cultures and has travelled and lived in: Germany, Vietnam, Johannesburg and Belgium.  Yet she had never been to Cape Town before.

Madi is currently enjoying her academic year with ISB (International School of Belgium) and is in 11th grade. The trip to Cape Town with her school, and the basketball and soccer exchange program with Hoops 4 Hope in Cross Roads Nyanga during the month of April was thoroughly enjoyable! Her experience with Hoops 4 Hope was so much fun. Pleasantly, Madi felt more at home in South Africa than anywhere else.  She is not sure whether she will be able to graduate with her ISB friends in Belgium, because her family might relocate again, but she is definitely considering attending university in Cape Town, at UCT. Madi’s first visit in the mother city (Cape Town), was a memorable one, and hopefully not her last one!

Founder Illuminates Ohio U!

Sunday, April 8th, 2012
April 6th-7th brought Mark Crandall to Ohio University to present at the 8th Annual Sports in Africa Conference. Mark shared the spotlight with renowned Senegalese basketball player Astou Ndiaye-Diatta, who discussed her WNBA career, coaching at the University of Utah, running an NGO with her husband and being a super mother to triplet boys.  Astou’s hoops career is going full circle to help young people and communities face challenges back in Senegal. The conference brought together an amazing group of passionate and diverse experts in sports and development, all of whom are creating sustainable solutions, challenging the models, providing needed research and building valuable networks in our important field.
Thank you to the Sports Marketing students who Crandall has been lecturing via Skype from Long Island who have created a campaign to help us at H4H raise needed funds through a unique sustainable partnership!

Memorial Basketball Court Fundraiser Success!

Written by Lucy Pollack

Stephen Silverman will be remembered for his energy, generosity and the joy he had for life. An avid basketball player and a long time supporter of Hoops 4 Hope, Stephen has left his unique mark on the basketball world. His son Eric, currently a Peace Corps Member in Sierra Leone and committed to continuing his father’s legacy, is actively fundraising to give-back in his father’s name.

Last month, along with Silverman’s family, close friends, Hoops 4 Hope supporters, and his basketball community, we remembered Stephen with a very special evening at Brooklyn Roasting Company.

The event was a great success and raised over $8,000 for the construction of the Stephen Silverman Memorial Basketball court in Capetown, South Africa.

We would again like to thank Brooklyn Roasting Company, Brooklyn Brewery, Patisserie Colson, Tony DiDio Selections for their generous donations for the event. And the greatest of thanks to Hoops 4 Hope, Liz Gessner and the Silverman and Schpoont Family for their support and guidance.

Young Shoe Designer Helps Sneaker Donations Reach Barefoot Kids

It is not unusual for teenagers to want to look cool. Ben Charles, 16, is one of them, a self-confessed sneaker addict.

“I used to collect a lot of sneakers,” says Ben. “I have a basketball sneaker, a tennis sneaker, a ‘hang-out’ sneaker.”

But an image of a barefoot child in Haiti following the country’s devastating earthquake made Ben realize some people his age are not lucky enough to have even one pair of sneakers.

“That picture is still in my head today. It’s that kid with his feet where you don’t even want to see it. He was beat up, dirty. It looked like he’d never been in a pair of sneakers,” says Ben.

Instead of looking away, he decided to do something.

“One day, I might be that other person and I hope there is another 16-year-old kid that would give to people that need,” says Ben.

He set out to create a charity to help those less fortunate discover his love of shoes.

“I feel like when you put on sneakers you feel confident. What good am I doing creating a company charging a $100 for a sneaker? Let’s donate a sneaker to someone that needs one,” says Ben.

This past summer, Saves by B was born, a line of sneakers designed by Ben. For every pair sold, another identical pair will be given to a child who cannot afford sneakers.

“You might be the kid that I donated it to or you might be the kid that bought it. Nobody’s going to know. It gives everyone that equal opportunity,” says Ben.

The sneakers are distributed with the help of K.I.D.S. and Hoops 4 Hope.

“Many of our kids show up without shoes. It’s hard to put into words how much that pair of sneakers really means to them,” says Hoops 4 Hope founder Mark Crandall.

It makes Ben not only a trendsetter but also a charitable role model.

“When I heard what Ben was doing, I was so impressed. Here a young high school student has felt that it is his duty and his interest to help people around the world,” says K.I.D.S. President Janice Weinman.

“He’s doing something purely kind right now but he’s also doing something cool,” says Jeremy Hoffman, Ben’s friend.

So, for helping teenagers in need fill their closets, one sneaker at a time, Ben Charles is the latest New Yorker of the Week. To get your own pair of Saves by B and for more information, visit Saves By B’s Facebook page.

By Purchasing a pair of SAVES by B, you are extending your hand to a person in need who will receive a new pair of SAVES B as a gift from you. For every pair of SAVES by B, one pair will be donated to those in need with the help of K.I.D.S and Hoops 4 Hope.

H4H Represents in Belgium!

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Long time H4H Champion and supporter Jason Baseden, Athletic Director from The International School of Brussels, has been busy planning his next adventure to Cape Town! As preparation for he and his basketball team’s journey  in early April, where they will of course be visiting and volunteering with the Hoops 4 Hope programs, he and his team are  hosting a Hoops 4 Hope basketball weekend on February 3rd and 4th with the American School in London and the American School in Paris.  Nike has donated 40 shirts to sell for a fundraiser and Jason’s kids are operating a fundraiser by keeping their game statistics as a means to generate funds! His student athletes, both varsity and junior varsity teams, are receiving pledges based upon their offensive charges, steals, rebounds, blockshots, and points made. We look forward to hearing about their successful efforts. Thanks, Jason and Team!
