"The Big Five'" refers to five of Africa's greatest wild animals. The lion, leopard, rhinoceros, buffalo and elephant are the most sought-after animals by people visiting game parks. Originally used only by hunters, the term 'Big Five' has become synonymous with the safari experience.

Lions and Leopards are among the most efficient meat-eating predators known to nature; the other three are herbivores. Nevertheless, they're massive enough to have few if any natural enemies.

At one time all of these animals roamed the great spaces of Southern Africa. Unfortunately, the farms, ranches, and other areas of human occupation now cover most of the subcontinent, and the larger life forms are now pretty well confined to formally protected areas such as National Parks and sanctuaries. So contrary to popular belief, it's extremely unlikely that you'll ever spot one of these guys strolling through a neighborhood where people live.
