AN IMPORTANT EVENT AND A GREAT TIME

Benefit Aims To Help Sustain H4H Achievements and Projects

SUMMER, 2007 - Each year, Hoops 4 Hope hosts a fun day of events aimed at both highlighting and celebrating the important work it does in Southern Africa. This year’s benefit will take place Saturday, July 28th.

The day begins in Southampton, Long Island with a basketball clinic intended for kids who want lessons from NBA heavyweights. Hall-of-Famer Larry Brown and Celtics Head Coach, Doc Rivers, are back and will be joined for a session of instructional games and drills by Lawrence Frank and Rod Thorn of the New Jersey Nets.

The entry fee is a suggested $20 and/or a pair of well-kept, pre-owned pair of sneakers. (Directions to the venue)

The evening party taking place that night will be held in Bridgehamption at the home of Daily News Sports Columnist and best-selling author, Mike Lupica.  The casual event promises a night of entertainment with sports celebrities, great food, amazing music, and a silent auction packed with items worth taking home.

GET ON THE BUS:
Hoops 4 Hope is packing a bus full of sneakers destined for Africa

MAY, 2007 - Hoops 4 Hope has been collecting and donating used sports equipment to disadvantaged kids in Southern Africa for over 10 years. Recently though, they got a great idea to get that stuff from here - in the States where they collect it - to the other side of the Atlantic, where they deliver it.

One of the challenges for kids in Africa isn’t just getting their hands on stuff we take for granted like uniforms and shoes, but also how to get to their practices and games. Cars are even harder to come by than sneakers! So lots of kids often walk amazing distances just to practice or play.

So Hoops 4 Hope said, “Why not find a way to get a school bus, fill it with shoes, and ship it all over to Zimbabwe together? Then you have equipment and transport!” It seemed like a crazy idea at first, but now that is exactly what’s happening.

This month “Hoops” teamed up with Back 2 Basics Basketball and The New York Knicks to help fill the bus up with sneakers. The Knicks’ Kenny “Sky” Walker and The New York Liberty’s Kim Hampton were just a few of the all-star volunteers on hand in the Bronx to make it happen.

Kids showing up for the event were treated to a coaching clinic, and were given some life skills pointers from the pros.

Then it was outside to the bus, to help load it up with sneakers. The event was a huge success and the bus is now almost loaded. After that, it’s off to Zimbabwe!

H4H Night At MSG Benefits Kids On
Both Sides of the Atlantic

March 20th, 2007 - It was a memorable night at Madison Square Garden for a handful of children and local charities. Thanks to the New York Knicks, Hoops 4 Hope Night at the Garden gave New York area children in need an opportunity to attend their first NBA game.

Through the generosity of the Knicks, a section of tickets were released exclusively to Hoops 4 Hope, and H4H was given the opportunity to make the tickets available to supporters. Donors purchasing the seats had the option to attend the game (versus Western Conference leading Dallas Mavericks), or donate the tickets to local kids in need, many of whom were attending their first live sporting event.

Proceeds from the ticket sales benefited Hoops 4 Hope’s sports and HIV education efforts in Southern Africa, as well as local New York based charities also involved in the evening. New Yorkers For Children, Back 2 Basics, and The Riverside Hawks will be shared in the evening’s experience as well.
